Isabel de Jesus continues her way towards sanctity with the closing of the diocesan process

Last May 4, the diocesan process of recompilation and organization of the documents related to the sanctity of Isabel de Jesus, an Augustinian Recollect nun of the 17th century, was concluded in Serradilla (Caceres). The public and solemn act took place in the monastery of the Augustinian Recollect nuns of Santisimo Cristo de las Victorias.

Evangelization in 8 territories of misión

The Order of Augustinian Recollects has been a missionary congregation since the time of its beginnings. In actuality, it is responsible for evangelization in 8 territories of mission located in seven different countries, Brazil, Colombia, China, Peru, Panama, Taiwan and Sierra Leon.

From the origin of the Order at the end of the XVIth century, the reform movement which was taking place in the Augustinian Province of Castilla, encouraged the new members of the Recollection to spread the Gospel in the missions. Already in 1605, they began their missionary endeavors in the Philippies and, soon after, they entered Japan.

The first half of the 20th century was also a time of major missionary expansion. At present the mission territories are the following:

 

Prelacy of Labrea, Brazil

The mission was accepted by the Order on August 8, 1925. It has been served by the Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentine since the 19th of November, 1979.
Prior to this date, it had been the responsibility of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova (1925-1960) and the Province of St. Rita (1960-1979). Extension: 230.240 square kilometers. Population: 78.832 inhabitants.
Three OAR communities, Labrea, Pauini and Tapua. Augustinian Recollects, 7 religious and the bishop, diocesan clergy 2 priests, 1 deacon.
Bishop: Jesus Moraza, O.A.R.

 

Prelacy of Marajo in Brazil

Accepted by the Order on the 19th of October, 1930.
Attended by the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova.
Extension: 105.000 square kilometers.
Population: 260.000 inhabitants
Four Augustinian Recollect communities, Salvaterra, Breves, Portel, Afua.
Augustinian Recollects 11 and the bishop, local clergy 5 priests and one deacon.
Bishop: Jose Luis Azcona, OAR.

Vicariate of Trinidad in Colombia

Accepted by the Order on the 8th of August of 1925. Attended by the Province of Our Lady of Candelaria.
On October 27, 2000, it was divided in two jurisdictions, the Diocese of Yopal and the Apostolic Vicariate of Trinidad. The Vicariate is still attended by the Augustinian Recollects.
Vicariate of Trinidad: 27.075 square kilometers. Population 65.000 inhabitants.
Four Augustinian Recollect communities, Trinidad, Orocue, Mani, Bocas del Pauto.
Augustinian Recollects: 11 and bishop, local clergy 3 priests.
Bishop: Javier Pizarro, OAR.

 

Diocese of Shangqiu in China

Assigned to the Order on the 15th of September, 1923. The mission was made an Apostolic Vicariate in 1937 and became a diocese on the 11th of April, 1946.
Attended by the Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentine.
Extension: 8.500 square kilometers. Population: 2.500.000 inhabitants (20.000 catholics).
Three Augustinian Recollect communities (including Heze, 4 religious).
Augustinian Recollects: 15 and the bishop, local clergy 1 priest.
Bishop: Nicolas She, OAR.

 

Prelacy of Bocas del Toro in Panama

Accepted by the Order, February 29, 1964.
Attended by the Province of Our Lady of Consolation.
Extension: 8.115 square kilometers. Population: 123.567 inhabitants.
Five Augustinian Recollect communities: Bocas del Toro, Almirante, Changuinola, Canquintu, Chiriqui Grande.
Augustinian Recllects : 11 and bishop. There are no local clerics.
Bishop: Jose Agustin Ganuza, OAR.

 

Prelacy of Chota in Peru

Accepted by the Order, July 7, 1963. Attended by the Province of St. Joseph.
Extension: 6.823 square kilometers. Population: 337.000 inhabitants.
One OAR community, parish of St. Monica.
Augustinian Recollects: 4 and bishop, local clergy 22 priests.
Bishop: Fortunato Pablo, OAR.

 

Kaohsiung in Taiwan

This territory became attached to the Order in 1963.
Extension of the diocese: 5.723 square kilometers. Population: 3.649.083 (Catholics 47.425).
Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentine: One community with 5 religious assisting two parishes, St. Nicholas and Holy Cross in Taliao (District of Kaohsiung).
Province of St. Ezekiel Moreno (1998): One community with 4 religious who attend 3 parishes, St. Augustine in Linyuan (District of Kachsiung) and Holy Cross and St. Joseph in Santimen (District of Pingtun).
Priests of the Diocese: 86, 18 diocesan and 68 religious. Bishop: Liu Zhongzhen.

 

Mission of Kamabai in Sierra Leon

Accepted by the Augustinian Recollects on the 14th of January, 1997. Due to a civil war raging in the country, the religious had to abandon the mission on various occasions. All left on the 24th of December of 1998 but were able to return to Kamabai on the 8th of April of 2004.
Since September of 1998, it has been under the care of the Province of St. Ezekiel Moreno. It had previously been under the pastoral care of the Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentine. (1997-1998).
Extension: Kamabai has an extension of approximately 150 square kilometers and a population of approximately 15,000 (Catholics 4.000).
Belongs to the Diocese of Makeni (36, 075 square kilometers) and a population of 1.900.000 (Catholics 32.000).
There are two Augustinian Recollect communities (Kamabai y Kamalo) with 5 religious. In the Diocese of Makeni, there are 28 priests of the diocese. Bishop: Girogio Biguzzi, SX
