General Curia

The General Chapter which is celebrated every six years is the maximum authority of the Order of Augustinian Recollects. In the General Chapter the Prior General and his Council are elected. They are to provide the service of government for the whole Order in accordance with the norms of universal and particular law. The General Curia, which is the organ of government for the Order, is composed of a Prior General , six Councilors and other cooperators. The seat of the General Curia is located in Rome.

The Prior General presides over and governs the Order and has ordinary authority over the provinces, houses, and brothers. He exercises this power by his proper authority or with his Council in accordance with the established particular and universal law.

Among the functions of the Prior General and Council are those of fostering the progress of the Order; promoting the religious and apostolic life; enhancing the unity and solidarity among the provinces and attending to the fulfillment of the requirements of the Constitutions, the Additional Code, and the ordinances of the General Chapter.

The seat of the General Curia was in Madrid from the time of its origin in 1621 until the act of suppression of 1835. After a few decades of dislocation during which the Order did not enjoy political liberty, it was again installed in Madrid in 1982.

It remained at this location until 1930 when it was transferred to Rome. In 1959, it was established in a new location in the EUR district of Rome where it continues to function.
Among the houses directly dependent on the General Curia are the College of St. Ildefonso in Rome and the residence, St. Ezekiel Moreno in Madrid.
