The tomb of Bishop Gallegos, a place of visits and thanksgiving

Father Javier Guerra Ayala, Prior General of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, has visited recently the tomb of the servant of God, Alfonso Gallegos at Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery (Sacramento, United States). The prior general was accompanied by the vice-postulator of the cause of the beatification of Monsignor Gallegos.

Besides the Augustinian Recollects, some members of the Avalos family were also present, whose daughter, Sara Lissette, was suffering from a serious eye defect and has recovered totally her vision after praying before the tomb of Bishop Gallegos on August 28 of last year.

As an act of gratitude for this favor which they attribute to the intercession of the Servant of God, the family also visited the remains of the bishop of the Hispanics, coinciding with the anniversary of healing.

From the cemetery, the group visited the Virgin of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe, where Bishop Gallegos served from 1981 to 1991, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Sacrament and the Bishop Gallegos square located between the Cathedral and the Capitol of the State of California. The visit ended with an audience with Monsignor Jaime Soto, Bishop of Sacramento, at the diocesan pastoral center.

Monsignor Alfonso Gallegos was known by his remarkable dedication to the needs of the Hispanics and the poor. The Augustinian Recollect bishop pastored them with joy and optimism, and has addressed the predicaments of the most needy, specially, of the migrant workers, the old and the young.

The diocesan process of the cause for the canonization of Monsignor Gallegos was inaugurated in Sacramento, California (United States) on December 4, 2005 and was closed on November 4, 2006. The Congregation for the causes of Saints in Rome granted the decree of validity on July 4, 2008.

The Prior General, who resides in Rome, Italy, presided the chapter of the Province of Saint Augustine at the Priory of Oxnard (California, United States). The promotion of Bishop Gallegos and his cause of canonization has been one of the most important determinations of this gathering.
