A biography of St. Fulgentius, bishop of Ruspe

St. Fulgentius lived in the north of Africa between the fifth and sixth centuries, at a time of social upheaval and religious persecution. The flourishing Roman society of the North of Africa was daily falling to pieces at the hands of the vandals and its ruin dragged the church with it. Fulgentius found himself faced with all this ruin. Though he did not reach the heights of the great Fathers of the fifth century he was capable under the circumstances and with his holiness and the light of his teaching he became a guide to bishops, monks and lay people. “He was the greatest theologian and holiest bishop of his time” (Bossuet).
