California, venue for American Augustinian Recollects for five days

The prior provincial, Fr. Charles Huse, commenced the assembly thanking the participants for coming to the fraternal encounter of the religious of the province. The prior of the community, Fr. Domingos Machado, gave some practical guidelines. In the absence of Fr. John Gruben, president of the provincial secretariat of spirituality and organizer of the gathering, Fr. John Oldfield introduced the lecturers and facilitated the sessions.

Fr. Samson S. Silloríquez, general councilor and general procurator of the Order before the Holy See, discussed various topics in the mornings: spirituality of the Constitutitions, communitarian character of the Order, the community praying and penitent, apostolic character of the Order, and, finally, the response of the Order to the challenges of today. Fr. Samson distributed a pamphlet for each of his topics for personal reflection.

Sister Barbra Ostheimer, directress of Loyola Institute of Spirituality in Orange (California) treated some matters related to communitarian life.

Juan Luis Calderón, coordinator of Centro Guadalupe of Union City (New Jersey), talked about the Augustinian Recollect Vocation Year (ARVY) and about the formative process of the Augustinian Recollect Youth (ARY).

On October 16, all the brothers participated in the priestly ordination of Juan José Guzman at the parish church of Mary, Star of the Sea. Ordaining prelate was the Augustinian Recollect Bishop David Arias.

The liturgical celebrations and the fraternal atmosphere helped make those days a pleasant spiritual and communitarian experience. The assembly ended on October 17 with the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Thomas Curry, auxiliary bishop of the pastoral region of Santa Barbara in California.
