The Augustinian Recollects have the largest number of bishops exercising their ministry in other countries

The Order of Augustinian Recollects has 1200 religious working in 19 different countries. It supplies 19 of its members to the Universal Church as pastors in charge of dioceses, prelatures and vicariates, especially in America.

12 Augustinian Recollect bishops born in Spain exercise their ministry in America. Of these 5 are in Brazil: Jose Luis Azcona, Jesús María Cizaurre, Francisco Javier Hernandez, Jesus Moraza and Joaquin Pertíñez, 3 are in Peru: Emiliano Cisneros, Fortunato José Carmelo Martínez and Pablo, 2 are in Panama: José Agustín Ganuza and Jose Luis Lacunza, 1is in the U.S., David Arias and 1 in Costa Rica, Angel San Casimiro. Among religious bishops of the Order there are also three Colombians: Héctor Javier Pizarro, Olavio Lopez and Alejandro Castano and there are two Panamanians: Mario Alberto Molina and Anibal Chestnut and a Mexican, Carlos Briseño.

However, the recent appointment of the Spaniard, Eusebio Hernández as an Augustinian Recollect bishop, who will exercise his ministery as head of the Diocese of Tarazona, (Zaragoza, Spain) breaks with tradition. On March 19, feast of St. Joseph, patron of the seminaries and the Order of Augustinian Recollects, he will receive his episcopal ordination in the church of monumental Monastery Veruela (Zaragoza).

According to the Pontifical Mission Society (PMS) of Spain, most of the 103 bishops from Spain minister outside their borders, working mainly in Latin America. Of these 103, 32 are retired bishops.

As to their destination: 72 are in South America, with the large number of 27 in Peru, including 10 retired, 20 in North and Central America, 10 in Africa and one in Asia.

The same source says there are72 bishops who belong to religious congregations, and of them 11 are Augustinian Recollects, 9 are Franciscans, 6 Jesuits, 6 Salesians, 5 Augustinians, and 5 Claretians, and the others are from other congregations.
